THE STORY

PAVA, a handmade Thai silk handbags brand under "Urban Majestic" concept, was established in 2019. The bags were crafted with hand woven Thai silk from the local artisans with decades of expertise and specialization in Thai silk and the SUPPORT Foundation of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand to assist the local artisan with their occupations in handicrafts, combined with high-quality leather from Italy, and delicately tailored by Thai craftmen who have expertise in silk making. Every single piece was fashionably designed with gimmicks and details that go well with each unique silk pattern. PAVA makes a new trend where Thai silk can easily be adapted to fit urban woman daily life.

The “Urban Majestic” concept was inspired by urban New York ladies from who are working women - confident, dauntless, and charming in their luxuriously sleek style with their own distinctiveness. “Urban” stands for city life. “Majestic” stands for elegance, power, and formidability. Together, they made PAVA - an image of an urban woman who stands out with confidence, ability, and grace.

Every PAVA bag was created from 100% authentic Mudmee Thai silk. “Mud” means the act of tying “Mee” means cotton or silk threads. Threads from variety of native silk- worms create the glossy, shimmering sheen to the fabric which makes it exceptionally elegant. Each “Mudmee” pattern cannot be produced twice because it is all weaved by hand, comparable to paintings. Make the products of art unique with their own distinctive pattern - a collecting pieces that can only be produced at a limited amount.

Embedding local culture to the present days, PAVA is committed to create shared values with Thai local communities. We made the bags adaptable to the urban environment to show the world this majestic and artistic material, from rural to urban atmosphere, which will raise awareness in sustainability of Thai local heritage in the urban context and develop career opportunities to the local artisans in the long run.

The brand was introduced to the public in Thailand in February 2019 and in Japan at Fashion World Tokyo in March. The bags were sold online for the first time since April. PAVA opened it first store at Siam Paragon in Bangkok in June 2019 and 2nd store at Le BHV Marais in Dubai in July 2019.

THE ART OF PRODUCING "MUDMEE' SILK

"Mudmee textiles have been known the world over for a very long time, but, as yet, it is unidentifiable since when and in which country was the technique originated. There are many countries in Asia such as Indonesia, the Philippines, India and China, which have been well-known as major sources of 'Mudmee' production, and Thailand has as good a claim as any other country in this direction. Indeed silk-weaving has always been a major occupation of Thai villagers as the earliest firm evidence for the presence of textiles in South-East Asia comes from the 7,000 year old funerary site of Ban Chiang in Udon Thani Province in the north-east of Thailand where remnants of cotton and hemp fibres and silk threads have been found attached to bronze bracelets and necklaces

2. Silkworms are raised from tiny eggs
3. Reeling of silk threads from the cocoons is undertaken approximately 45 days from the day the eggs are hatched
4. Skeins of silk after reeling are yellow
5. Cleaning of silk threads to remove seracin or the gum
6. "Mudmee' is accomplished after the cleaned
7. Dyeing processes involve the immersion of the threads into a container of chemical or natural dye
8. Winding of the "Mudmee' threads onto bobbins
9. Warp threads which form the length of the cloth

The intricate process

The intricate process of making quality Mudmee silk requires a competant weaver to have a great deal of handicraft skill and patience and an intelligent mind which is able to absorb and digest a wide range of ideas and knowledge. Mastery of the art of weaving is an accomplishment limited to only a few.
